European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
