New research reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing such medications need to be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
People who have stopped the jabs explain a intense return of appetite.
"It was like something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
